Rinnai and Rheem both sell a condensing tankless unit in the 199,000 BTU class that will carry a three-bathroom house through a January morning, and on paper the two are close enough that no spec sheet is going to decide this for you. The Rinnai vs Rheem tankless water heater question gets settled somewhere else. It gets settled by who sells it to you, who answers the phone when a control board quits in year seven, and whether the model you are actually looking at is condensing or not.
Rinnai is a specialist. Tankless is the business, not a product line inside a catalogue. Rheem is a full-line manufacturer where tankless sits on a shelf next to gas tanks, electric tanks, hybrids and pool heaters. That one structural difference runs downstream into everything: the sales channel, the depth of the parts bench, who administers the warranty, and how easy the unit is to buy on a Saturday. It is the same pattern behind the Rheem and A.O. Smith comparison, where the tier you buy inside a brand moved the answer further than the badge on the jacket ever did.
The short answer
- Gas at the house, whole-house replacement, a contractor doing the buying: Rinnai. The trade channel is where their support lives, and an installer who hangs them weekly has the parts and the habits.
- You are buying it yourself, today, off a shelf: Rheem. It is in the big-box aisle under its own name and in supply houses under Ruud, and a bad one goes back to the counter.
- One fixture, no gas line, a bathroom sink over an unheated garage: Rheem by default. Rinnai does not sell an electric tankless heater in the US, so it is not in this comparison at all.
- You want recirculation and the house has no dedicated return line: Rinnai. Both companies build units with a pump inside, but Rinnai’s line is deeper on the no-return-line case.
- Hard water, twelve grains per gallon or more: Neither badge rescues you. The descaling interval sets the lifespan, and it sets it identically for both.
What each company actually is
Rinnai Corporation is a Nagoya gas-appliance maker whose North American arm builds tankless water heaters and hydronic products and very little else. It opened a plant in Griffin, Georgia in 2018 to build them on this side of the Pacific. There is no Rinnai storage tank in a US aisle, no Rinnai hybrid, no Rinnai electric unit. Everything the company knows how to do is pointed at one appliance.
Rheem Manufacturing is the opposite shape. Gas tanks, electric tanks, heat pump hybrids, gas tankless, electric tankless, pool heaters, furnaces, air conditioners. It also badges the same hardware under other names, which is the subject of its own piece on Ruud, Richmond and the rest of the Rheem badges. One detail surprises people: Rheem has been owned by Paloma Co. Ltd since 1988, and Paloma is a Nagoya gas-appliance company too. The rivalry is real. The ancestry is closer than the marketing suggests.
Specialisation buys focus and a trade network that treats one product as the whole business. Breadth buys availability and a service ecosystem that already exists in your town. Both are genuine advantages. They serve different buyers.

A plumber is buying it for you and the house has no return line? Rinnai, and the recirculation line is the reason. Buying it yourself, or there is no gas line at all? Rheem, because it is on the shelf and it is the only one of the two with an electric answer.

What the badge does to your gas bill
Nothing. That is the finding, and it deserves arithmetic rather than assertion.
Take this site’s standard household: 64 gallons a day at a 70 °F rise. That works out to 13,637,568 BTU of delivered heat a year, or 136.4 therms. Input energy is delivered heat divided by the unit’s uniform energy factor, so a condensing tankless at a UEF of 0.93 burns 136.4 ÷ 0.93 = 147 therms. At $1.50 a therm that is $220 a year, $2,200 over ten. A non-condensing unit at 0.82 burns 136.4 ÷ 0.82 = 166 therms, or $249 a year and $2,490 over ten. Do that division with your own therm price and your own household and you will get your own answer in about a minute.
Now put a Rinnai and a Rheem next to each other. Both companies’ condensing units certify in roughly the same 0.93 to 0.96 band in the AHRI directory, and both non-condensing lines sit around 0.81 to 0.85. The badge moves the yearly fuel bill by an amount too small to bother printing. The condensing decision moves it by $29 a year, $290 across ten years, which at this household’s usage does not by itself cover a price gap of several hundred dollars. So if you came here to learn which brand is cheaper to run, the honest answer is that you asked the wrong question about the right appliance. Choose condensing or not, choose a capacity that matches your flow at your winter groundwater temperature, then choose the badge on service. In that order.
Recirculation is what people are really shopping for
The complaint that turns a happy tankless owner into an unhappy one is the wait. A tank holds 50 gallons at temperature. A tankless fires only when you open the tap, so the cold slug sitting in the pipe has to be pushed out first, and in a long single-storey house with the unit in the garage and the master bath at the far end that wait is genuinely irritating.
Both companies answer it with a pump built into the unit. The difference is what the house has to give them back. A conventional loop wants a dedicated return line from the far fixture, which existing houses almost never have. Rinnai’s RUR and RX units are built around the retrofit case, using the cold line as the return path with a valve at the far fixture, and the scheduling is aimed at not running the pump all day. Rheem’s Prestige units with an integrated pump do the same job perfectly well, but the configuration assumes more from the plumbing.
This is the one row in the table where I think the specialist earns its reputation on merit rather than folklore. It is also the row where you should stop reading and go look at your own basement, because if the house was built with a return line the advantage evaporates and both units do the same job.
Service, parts, and the seven-year problem
A tank that leaks is finished. A tankless unit with a failed fan, board or flame rod is a parts job, which is why the appliance is quoted at 15 to 20 years while a tank gets 8 to 12. That only pays off if somebody within driving distance can get the part and knows the fault codes. Which is where these two diverge in a way no chart captures.
Rheem’s advantage is that its service ecosystem is enormous and already in your town, attached to furnaces and tanks and air conditioners. Rinnai’s is that the dealers who carry it carry it seriously. Which one wins depends on your zip code, which is not a satisfying answer but it is the true one. I keep meeting people who chose the brand their neighbour has. In a small town that is not a bad heuristic, because the neighbour’s choice tells you who services what locally.
Here is where my own recommendation breaks. I said a contractor-bought Rinnai is the default for a whole-house gas job. If the nearest dealer stocking Rinnai parts is ninety minutes away and there are four Rheem outfits in the phone book, ignore me. Buy the one you can get fixed on a Tuesday.
The durability argument nobody can settle
Search this comparison and you will find plumbers who swear Rinnai units last and Rheem units do not, and plumbers who say the reverse with equal certainty. Both are describing a real sample. Both samples are small, local and selected by whichever brand that plumber installs.
There is no public model-level failure database for water heaters in the United States. Not for Rinnai, not for Rheem, not for anyone. No agency collects it, no manufacturer publishes it, and the warranty claim rates that would answer the question outright are internal documents. Any article that ranks these two on reliability with a number attached made the number up. I would not pay a premium for a badge that has no failure data behind it, and I would not accept a discount on one either.
What can be checked is the warranty, which is the manufacturer’s own bet on its heat exchanger, and it comes out close. Rinnai publishes 12 years on the heat exchanger, 5 on parts and 1 on labour for its residential condensing units. Rheem’s residential condensing tankless warranty also runs 12 years on the heat exchanger and 5 on parts. Read the document for the exact model and year you are buying, because series differ. What actually decides the outcome is scale, hardness and the descaling interval, which is the argument made at length in how long a tankless water heater really lasts. Two identical units in Phoenix and Seattle will not die in the same decade, and the badge on the front has nothing to do with it.
